Are there really that many people reading blogs?

I was surprised to discover Martha Stewart recently devoted one of her morning shows to Blogging. During the show, she followed the same format for her previous craft-type shows - interviewing a few notable bloggers (Perez Hilton, Martha.com bloggers, etc.), and demonstrated how one goes about setting up a blog. Additionally, her audience was made up of bloggers on laptops, writing about the show as it was happening. She espoused that “blogs have changed the way we communicate.”

It struck me as a bit odd that Martha would devote and entire show to blogging. Although I could see something of a connection between the ad hoc, craft nature of a blog, as some kind of digital scrapbook. It got me wondering: are there really that many people out there reading all of these blogs, or is this just some kind of ill considered hype? Are people like my parents out there Twittering?

Lovely Typography from the Darden Studio

The font “Freight” by the Darden Studio, a lovely and space efficent serif font for display and text has been making it’s way into quite a few editorial redesigns recently, including Better Homes & Gardens, Out Magazine, and a redesign of the ‘Khaleej Times’, the Persian Gulf’s leading English language newspaper, by Luke Hayman and Paula Scher.

The Grand Tour in York, UK

Although summer has officially come to an end, I discovered this interesting summer initiative in York, UK to garner interest in their art museums.

“The Grand Tour is a collection of pricess paintings set free around the streets of York by the National Gallery, York Art Galler, and Hewlett Packard.

This summer, the National Gallery and York Art Gallery have set free some of the world’s most famous paintings in the streets of York. Masterpieces by great artists - from Caravaggio to Constable - compete for attention in the medieval city centre. The Grand Tour in York is a celebration of great art and beautiful buildings brought together in the historic capital of the north.”
